The Bold 180 Framework is a simple way for parents to turn things around at home. It isn’t about being a perfect parent. It’s about making small, steady changes that tell your child: you can talk to me.
B: Believe
Believe in your child, and believe that change is possible for both of you. Teens can feel when they are being watched with suspicion. They open up when they feel believed in.
Try this week: Tell your child one specific thing you admire about them, with no “but” attached.
O: Overcome
Overcome the patterns that close conversations down: lecturing, raising your voice, reacting before listening, or bringing up past mistakes. Many of us learned these habits growing up. They can be unlearned.
Try this week: When your teen tells you something hard, pause and say “Thank you for telling me” before you say anything else.
L: Lead
Lead by example. Show your child what it looks like to admit a mistake, apologize, and try again. When you model honesty, you make it safe for them to be honest too.
Try this week: Share a mistake you made at their age and what you learned from it.
D: Deliver
Deliver on your word. Show up for the game, keep the promise, set aside the time you said you would. Trust is built through consistency, one kept promise at a time.
Try this week: Schedule a 20-minute, phone-free one-on-one with your child and protect that time.
Put the framework into practice
If your child is in crisis or talking about harming themselves, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) any time, day or night. In an emergency, call 911. Bold 180 offers parenting guidance and support. It is not a substitute for medical or mental health care.
